Thoughts on "In a World..."

Name: In a World...
Service: Netflix
Genre: Comedy/Drama
Type: Movie

My girlfriend and I decided to put this on after some endless scrolling on Netflix. I knew the actress, Lake Bell, from a role on the short lived How To Make It in America on HBO. I knew it had to do with voice over/acting work; a field that I find intriguing. We gave it a shot.

Long story short this movie is about a daughter of a very well known voice-over actor trying to make it her own way in the field with some love story mixed in. The female lead, Lake Bell (who also wrote and directed the film) has a strong, almost annoying personality that I didn’t find endearing and kind of took me out of the movie. It made me not care for her character. Luckily, the film has a good supporting cast and when the camera was on them I was a little more interested.

Should you watch? Maybe. I didn’t hate the movie (i’ve seen far worse),  but I found myself doing other things like checking my phone while it was on. It failed to hold my attention like other movies do. I just could not stand the main character. If you do watch it and find yourself drifting just a little bit, don’t hesitate to find something else to watch.

Episode Name: NXT 11/13/14
Service: WWE Network
Genre: Pro-Wrestling
Type: TV Show

Say what you will about wrestling, but there is something about it that I have found entertaining ever since I saw my first show when I was a kid. I won’t get caught into the whole it’s “fake” argument because the fact is yes, it is a scripted television show, and it isn’t “real”, but so are most of the other shows that I watch. Moving on.

NXT is the WWE’s (World Wrestling Entertainment) minor league, but the quality is anything but. This episode especially shines with the NXT champion Adrian Neville defending his title against his best friend Sami Zayn in the main event. The match goes about 15-20 minutes and is an amazingly fast paced, high-flying bout that engages the viewer. The women in NXT (not divas, as WWE likes to call them for some dumb reason) manage to outclass their counterparts who are on the main shows in not only wrestling ability, but better character development. Alexa Bliss vs. Sasha Banks is a short but sweet match. NXT runs every Thursday night (soon to be Wednesdays next year) exclusively on the WWE network.

Should I watch? If you are a wrestling fan in general, this is a show to watch. The product is better than the main shows and this weeks show has an outstanding main event with a solid under-card. If you are not a fan of the genre than this may be a hard sell. While it is a good episode, I feel like there is better content on the network (and lets face it; if you are not a fan already, getting a wrestling heavy network is probably not on your to-do list) to introduce you to this type of entertainment. With that said, if you absolutely are not interested then I doubt this overview will change your mind.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia- Season 9 Episode 6: "Flowers for Charlie"

NOTE: When it comes to TV series, I will not always start at the beginning of the series; as some of the shows I write about are ones that I have already invested some time in. I will always try to let you guys know if a certain episode has some continuity from earlier episodes because I know sometimes it sucks if you watch an episode and don’t understand a certain joke or situation because it alludes to something earlier in that series.

Episode Name: Flowers for Charlie
Service: Netflix
Genre: Sitcom
Type: TV Show

In this episode of the popular FX show Charlie is chosen to be a test subject by two scientists conducting an experiment to see if a pill can make him 7x smarter. For those new to It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia; it is a situational comedy about a group of friends who own a bar in Philadelphia, PA.  It is currently in its ninth season and still running. When Charlie is given the pill, he starts to become “smarter”. He listens to Beethoven, learns mandarin, and plays chess (thinking that is what smart people do). While that is going on, Dennis, Mac, and Dee are left to deal with a rat in the bar and come up with some questionable and hilarious ways to try and get rid of it.

Why you should watch it: Obviously if you are a fan of this show you already know what to expect. If you are new, this episode stands on its own and does not absolutely require prior knowledge of earlier episodes. Watch it for Charlie’s performance alone, as he continues to be one of the funniest characters on TV today.

Introduction

What I write about are more my thoughts on what is available to watch on today's internet video services . I emphasize today's because sites such as Amazon instant video and Netflix constantly change what is available every so often. How many times have you sat on the couch and endlessly search through the catalog just to decide what to actually watch? I am here to hopefully provide some insight as to what is worth watching on these services at the time.
